In our village there are many churches and chapels. The main church of the village and one more chapel are dedicated to Agios Georgios.
Churches of Agios Georgios
The main church of the village is located in the heart of the community and it is quite spacious. The present church was built around the middle of the 20th century. In 1915, according to Demetris Sofroniou, one of the oldest residents of the village, the villagers decided to build a new larger church since the community was growing. The construction of the church was completed fifteen years later, in 1930. Thirteen years after that, in 1943, the church collapsed, apart from the side walls. According to Sofroniou, this was due to constructional defect and faults made by the engineers. The collapse was really painful for the villagers. Their feelings are impressed in the words of Sofroniou: ‘so much effort, so much money and 500 souls crying and ululating above the remains’. The reconstruction of the church began in 1955 and contributions to this were made by Archbishop Makarios III, by the residents of the community, as well as by so many others who loved our village.
The second church of Agios Georgios is much smaller and it is located at the edge of the village. This small chapel is built on the foundations of another church.
Spread around our village are many chapels. These are the chapels of Prophet Elias, of Agia Eleni, of Agios Theodoros and the chapel of Agios Gennadios.
The chapel of Agia Eleni is situated near the exit of the village, while holy water spurts next to it. Built on a height of the village, on the Linoui height in particular, is the chapel of Prophet Elias. Ten years ago, at the location Agios Theodoros, a chapel dedicated to the saint was built on the remains of an older church. Additionally, at the location ‘Monastiroui’, the chapel of Timios Stavros wasrestored and declared as an ancient monument of the Department of Antiquities.
Also, built in the abandoned Turkish village Mwro – Nero, which is located southeast of the village, is the chapel of Agios Gennadios.
